To my L̶i̶b̶e̶r̶t̶a̶r̶i̶a̶n̶ Friends:
We can support Johnson without compromising our principles. I was not happy with the decision for Johnson/Weld in Orlando, but I shook those feelings off on the plane ride home.
There are so many things we need to fix as a people, and I KNOW Libertarianism is the solution.
Gary Johnson and Bill Weld represents one small step in the right direction, PERIOD. Let’s remember that what we want will not happen tomorrow. We cannot take a train traveling at 100 miles per hour toward a cliff and switch tracks, we have to slow it down first; we have to lay some connecting track first. What we need to do, as Libertarians, is to keep focus on our principles and make certain that we keep them in mind as we move forward, in considering our platform positions, and in selecting our representatives. The ultimate goal of the Anarchist side of the party is to make government obsolete. However, like switching the track on the train at 100 MPH, making dramatic changes instantly, without slowing it down, and installing alternative connecting tracks, we will cause much more damage than we will fix.
I am personally working on a number of problems we have in our world that I believe to be extremely important. We need to end Xenophobia, we need to end Homophobia, we need to end Ignorance, Hatred, FEAR, and Violence. There is this pervasive culture of fear that is promoted by political opportunists. The awesome people working on these projects with me understand, like I do, that these problems do not end overnight.
Many Libertarians see Johnson / Weld as being the worst choice we could have made in Orlando. However, people who do not know Libertarianism see Johnson / Weld as something completely different, refreshing, and maybe they are something to NOT be terrified of. Like I said earlier, they are one small step in the correct direction. Which direction Libertarians choose to go from this small step is ultimately up to the body of the convention in 2018, 2020, and every convention thereafter. There is a ton of work to do, not much time to make it all happen, and if we are to succeed, we ALL need to come together and go to work. Ladies and Gentlemen, this is OUR world, and it is up to us to make it a better place from our having been here!
Sincerely,
Steve Scheetz
